The first mistake that hurt
In my first year (2017), I configured an Extreme Networks X440 on my lab bench. The VLANs were right, the pings were clean, and I shipped it to an office about 80 miles away. The site called it dead on arrival. It wasn't dead. The fiber patch panel at that office used a different pair mapping than our lab, and I had skipped physical-layer verification because I was in a hurry. One bad assumption, $890 in extra labor, and a one-week delay.
Then came September 2022. I changed an access VLAN on 14 remote switches without verifying the management path first. Every switch dropped off the network at the same moment. That's when I realized I didn't need more documentation—I needed a checklist.
Why I stopped trusting my memory
Memory is terrible for checklists. Stress makes you skip steps. A config shot down to 14 switches at once does not care that you were sure about the VLAN. That's why the checklist is written down, not stored in my head.

1. Physical layer before packets

One access port downgraded to 100Mb for weeks. The problem wasn't the port speed config; it was an RJ45 connector that had been crimped with the pairs untwisted too far. A device on the target VLAN responds.
