Here's the short version: a connector is a compatibility decision, not a cable accessory. In an enterprise network, the connector connects not only cable to device, but also cable to enclosure, device to power, and the whole connection to its environment. If you're using an Extreme Networks WS-AP3825i access point and routing its uplink into a G100 enclosure, the connector choice can matter as much as the AP model itself. I know because I got that choice wrong. The correct answer was sitting in the Extreme Networks support portal, and I didn't look until after the failure.
The mistake that made me check the portal first
I've built and fixed wireless networks for eight years. In September 2022, we were adding a WS-AP3825i to a production line. The AP was mounted on a support post outside a small G100 enclosure. The enclosure held a PoE switch and a media converter, and the plan was simple: run one shielded Cat6 cable from the switch inside the enclosure to the AP outside.
The AP worked on my bench. The switch worked. The problem appeared only when the connector had to pass through the enclosure wall.
I picked a standard cable gland from the bin because it matched the knockout diameter. It was the wrong architecture for a pre-terminated cable. A cable gland is designed to seal around a cable jacket, not around an RJ45 plug. The boot on the plug made it worse, so I made the classic penny-wise mistake: I trimmed the boot off the RJ45 connector to force it through.
The link came up. I called it done and left the site. The next morning, the AP was offline. The plug had worked itself loose under vibration. The boot I removed wasn't decoration—it protected the latch and provided strain relief. Without it, cable movement transferred directly into the plug. No dramatic failure, just packet loss, reboots, and a phone call asking whether I could come back.
Between the second visit, replacement cable, and a proper panel-mount connector, the mistake cost about $450. Not a fortune, but enough to change my process.
What the support portal had that I skipped
The product documentation for the WS-AP3825i was already on the Extreme Networks support portal. It didn't mention G100 enclosures by name, but it had the installation guide with cable requirements and connector callouts. Ten minutes of reading would have told me to use a sealed bulkhead connector for the enclosure entry, not a cable gland forced around a terminated RJ45.
That's the thing about the support portal: it is not just for firmware downloads and license renewals. It is also a source of truth for physical details. A forum post will give you opinions; the hardware guide gives you the accepted range of parts. Before a non-standard install, I now treat the portal as the first site to check.
So, what is a connector?
A connector is any part that creates a separable junction between two components. The name is easy, but the job is not. A connector has to transmit the signal, hold itself together mechanically, and keep the environment out. In an industrial deployment, an IP-rated G100 enclosure with a non-rated connector in the wall is no longer an IP-rated installation.
When people search for what is connector, they usually expect an answer about RJ45, LC, or antenna connectors. That answer is fine, but it is incomplete. The connector you have to worry about is not always the one on the cable. It can be the port on the WS-AP3825i, the coupler in the enclosure wall, the gland at the cable entry, or the strain relief that keeps the latch from popping out.
Look at the RJ45 plug on a typical Cat6 cable. It carries data, often power, and a mechanical latch. The latch is as important as the pins. If the latch is damaged or if the cable is pulling on it, the link might still light up for a few seconds. It will not survive a production environment.
How I check connectors now
Before I order parts for a project, I go to the Extreme Networks support portal and search by the exact model, not by memory. I look for the installation guide and the data sheet. Then I check the route the cable will take, not just the device itself. The route is where enclosures and connectors really show up.
Three questions have saved me more than once. Does the cable enter already terminated, or can I terminate it after routing? If it's pre-terminated, I need a pass-through coupler made for that purpose. Does the enclosure connector keep its IP rating? If not, I'm creating the next failure. Does the assembly have strain relief? A cable that moves will eventually disconnect. The most expensive connector is the one you can't see behind a closed lid.
G100 enclosures and similar small boxes are fine in the right place. They are not a problem by themselves. The problem is when someone treats the enclosure as a simple hole in the wall. Every knockout is a decision. The connector in that knockout is part of the same system as the WS-AP3825i port.
What I would tell you if you're about to install one
Slow down. If you have a WS-AP3825i in your hand and a G100 enclosure on the wall, spend ten minutes with the Extreme Networks support portal before you cut, crimp, or order anything. Look at the port layout and the cable entry requirements. If the documentation does not answer your enclosure question, ask someone who has installed enclosures before. A vendor who says this is outside their specialty is more useful than a vendor who says everything works with everything.
Connectors are not a universal language. They are specifications. Treat them that way, and the install will stay connected.
